SEO → signup funnel template

The SEO → signup funnel template follows organic search from impression to signup, by page and by query. It joins Google Search Console (impressions, clicks, position) with GA4 (sessions, key events) and your product database (signups, activation), so you can see which pages and topics turn searchers into users, not just visitors.

Dashboards show the funnel by landing page, by topic cluster and by query group, plus a "high impressions, low CTR" opportunity list and a "high traffic, low signup" list. It is the reporting version of the workflow in The SEO → signup funnel, end to end.

Why do Search Console and GA4 never match?

They measure different things. Search Console counts clicks on Google results; GA4 counts sessions that loaded your tag, after consent. Search Console also aggregates differently by view: query, country, device and date tables aggregate by property, while page tables aggregate by page, so totals can differ even inside Search Console.1 The newest data is marked as preliminary and may still change over the next few hours.1 The template therefore joins on landing page and date, and shows the click-to-session ratio as its own metric so drift is visible.

How should you read the funnel?

Read it as three separate problems, each with its own fix. A page with many impressions and a low CTR has a snippet problem: rewrite the title and description to match the query intent. A page with healthy clicks and few signups has a page problem: the content answers the question but gives no reason to try the product, so add a relevant example, template or call to action. A topic cluster with low impressions has a coverage problem: you are not yet eligible for the queries that matter, which is a content-planning question rather than an optimization one.

How is the join built?

Simplified join (generated by the template)
sql
select
    d.date,
    d.landing_page,
    gsc.impressions,
    gsc.clicks,
    ga.sessions,
    coalesce(s.signups, 0) as signups
from dim_page_day d
left join gsc_page_day gsc using (date, landing_page)
left join ga4_organic_page_day ga using (date, landing_page)
left join (
select signup_date as date, first_landing_page as landing_page, count(*) as signups
    from product.signups
    where first_channel = 'Organic Search'
    group by 1, 2
) s using (date, landing_page)

URLs are normalized first (protocol, trailing slash, query strings, locale prefixes) so the three sources agree on what a page is. See the Search Console connection docs and the in-depth Search Console and GA4 guide.

Search Console and GA4 for search and sessions; Postgres (or any supported database) for signups.

Prefer to keep product data on your own servers? Connect the database through Kimo Bridge and the signup counts are queried live instead of copied.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a data warehouse to use this template?

No. Kimo syncs Search Console and GA4 itself and connects directly to your product database, or queries it live through Kimo Bridge.

Can I see signups by search query?

Not directly: Search Console does not pass queries to your site. The template attributes signups to landing pages, then shows the queries that drive each page.

How are signups attributed to organic search?

By default, the first landing page and channel stored on the signup record. You can switch to GA4 key events if your product does not store landing pages.

Does it track AI Overview traffic?

Google includes AI feature traffic within the Web search type, so it is in the funnel totals, but Search Console does not report it separately.
